Cha-cha Cha-Cha-Cha is the newcomer of the Latin American dances and, by far, the most useful socially as a high portion of modern music is based on cha cha timing. This dance was first seen in the dance-halls of America, in the early fifties, closely following Mambo, from which it was developed. Shortly after the Mambo was introduced, another rhythm started to gain popularity, a rhythm that was ultimately to become the most commonly known of the Latin American dances throughout the world. It was named Cha-Cha-Cha. The music is slower than Mambo and the rhythm is less complicated. The interpretation of Cha-Cha-Cha music should produce a happy, carefree, cheeky, party-time-like atmosphere. Recently it was decided to shorten the name to Cha-Cha. Socially the Cha-cha is one of the most impressive and useful dances as it is the most common rhythm in modern music. Care should be taken if the possibility exists that you may progress your dancing to showdance, professional, advanced or competitive levels as there are two timings. The "Latin timing" or "1 2 3 4 & 1" is the only one suitable for the more advanced levels. See Dancesport UK on cha cha |
