About DSNI
As in any sport you need to have the correct equipment and training which should be easy but unfortunatley dance is unregulated so there are lots of people out there teaching dance who have never danced competitively or to an advanced level themselves. So when selecting a teacher it is important to ask if they have competed themselves and are involved in the competitive scene so that you can be sure you are paying for the correct tuition. If they have not danced competitively they will not have the necessary experience to teach anything other than social dance. There are also teachers advertising Modern Ballroom and Latin who in fact teach sequence dance so ensure you select a teacher who can deliver what you require and avoid injury.
Bad tuition can lead to pains or injuries from bad posture or from accidents caused by either bad hold or teaching inappropriate material.
Tension is a major cause of injury as even a small shock on a tense muscle will cause injury where as a relaxed muscle will escape injury.
The single most important piece of equipment when considering dance to an advanced level are the dancing shoes as contrary to peoples perception they are nor to make floor contact slippier but are in fact used to control grip.
