Jive Jive, brought over from America, has been initially developed from a dance called "Jitterburg" by eliminating all its acrobatic elements and polishing the technique. The first description of Jive, made by London dance teacher, Victor Silvester, was published in Europe in 1944. The Boogie, Rock & Roll and the American Swing also influenced this dance. Jive is a very fast, energy-consuming dance. It is the last dance danced at competitions, and dancers have to show that, having danced four dances already, they still have the energy to go hard at it. There are two generally recognised jives - the "Rock and Roll Jive" and the "Chassis Jive" but thousands of couples have their own jive routines which are unique to them, and give them great pleasure. We only teach the officially recognised versions - sorry. The Rock and Roll jive is used, as its name suggests, with fast rock and roll music but it is physically the less demanding of the two dances. The Chassis jive is danced to slower music, it has more steps per bar so is physically the more demanding. The chassis jive is the only jive used in competitive or professional dance. |
