Argentine Tango lesson content.
These groupings are subject to revision at short notice and are meant for general guidance only, so no assumptions should be made about individual class content.

As with all Latin Quarter lessons, each class will have a main focus(in this instance Argentine Tango)but other dances, which assist in the enjoyment, understanding of or teaching of Argentine Tango will also be introduced as required.

Group One
EL Retroceso (reverse start)
Man
Back on right foot taking a short step
Step to the left taking a curved route past the right foot and ensuring the step is slightly wider than the woman's.

Woman
Forward on left foot taking a short step
Step to the right taking a curved route past the left foot and ensuring the step is slightly shorter than the mans.


El Salida (The continuation of the start)
Man
Forward on right outside the lady
Forward on left passing right foot( this step can be turned if necessary in which case the left would not pass the right foot)

LA Cruzada (The Cross)
Man
Forward on left
Forward on right placing foot behind and to the left to left foot
Woman
Back on right
Back on left placing it in front of and to the right of the right foot

Group Two

Revision, practice and styling improvements of previous group
The Forward Rock Turn
Man
Before moving pivot 45 degrees
Step forward with left pivoting 90 degrees to left
Step forward then back with right while pivoting taking a curving "V" path past the left foot to end up facing the opposite way.
Now do the "Backward Rock Turn" to return you to the line of dance
The forward rock on its own turn would be used to position you for steps that require the man to be travelling backwards.
Woman
Before moving pivot 45 degrees
Step back with right foot pivoting 90 degrees to right
Step back then forward with left while pivoting taking a curving "V" path past the right foot to end up facing the opposite way.
Now do the "Backward Rock Turn" by reversing the previous steps to return you to the line of dance

The Tango box
Man
Short step back on right
Back on Left taking an curved "L" shaped path past the right foot
Close Right foot to left foot on slow time (1,2)
Reverse this to complete the box

Group Three

El Ocho (The Eight)
Man
The man is stationary with knees slightly flexed and his weight on his right foot throughout this step

Woman
With weight on left leg flick the lower right leg backwards parallel to the floor with knees firmly together then rotate the body anticlockwise while moving the lower right leg back down and to the lady's left between the lady and man. (count and)
On one with left leg flexed and both knees together point the right foot the ladys left between the lady and man.
Pivot to face the man and this time flick the left leg back parallel to the floor then swivel to the lady's right (count and)
With right leg flexed and knees together point the left foot to the ladys right between the lady and man traveling clockwise
Transfer weight to left foot and rotate to face man (count and)
If the man wishes to join in and mirror the ladies movements the step becomes a "Doble Ocho".

El Doble Ocho(The double eight} Los Tres Ochos (Three eights) El Ocho Abierto(The open eight)
El Gancho (an embellishment meaning The Hook)
Man
With your left leg flexed and extended forward lead woman to your right across you rotating slightly clockwise
Check lady's progress with your right arm and lead her to step backwards by rotating anti clockwise while leaving your left foot in place but elevating the knee.
Stay in that position until the lady performs "El Gancho"
Lady
Walk forward onto right foot over mans left foot
Transfer your weight back unto your left foot, relaxing your right knee when you should feel the mans knee beneath and behind you If you do not feel the mans knee, do not Gancho.
Ensuring that your knees are together , curve the right backwards beneath the mans thigh in the hooking kick of the Gancho.

Group Four

Man
Lift left foot and replace
Lift right foot and replace
Woman
Lift right foot and replace
Lift left foot and replace

La Cunita (the Cradle)
Man
Left foot forward
Right foot forward to left of and behind left foot and taps foot without transferring weight.
Right foot back and transfer weight
Left foot to front of and across front of right foot and taps ground
Woman
Right foot back
Standing on the right foot, tap the left foot in front of and across the right foot.
Forward with the left foot
Standing on left tap right foot across and behind the left foot
El Paseo (The Stroll)
Left foot forward
Right foot forward passing left
La Caza (The Chase or Chasse)
Man
Left foot forward
Right foot forward to join left
Woman
Group Five

Revision, practice and styling improvements of previous group
La Llevada (Classic foot lead)
Man
Transfer weight to right foot
Tap the inside of the ladies left foot with your left foot
Step to the side transfering weight to the left foot making sure you step in a circular direction
Standing on the left foot with the left knee flexed use the right foot to slide the ladies foot around the circle. End when your knees come together and your leg pointing forward.
Group Six
