What Makes Argentine Tango Different?

Argentine Tango has a very different character from many other forms of partner dancing.

At its heart is the connection between two dancers. You learn how movements can be led and followed so that partners can dance together rather than simply repeating a memorised routine.

As your dancing develops, you can begin to explore how different movements work together and how your dancing can respond to the character and phrasing of the music.

This combination of connection, improvisation and musical interpretation is one of the things that makes Argentine Tango so rewarding to learn.

New to Tango?

Argentine Tango for Beginners in Belfast

If you've watched Argentine Tango and thought it looked too complicated to try, don't be put off.

You don't need any previous Tango or dance experience before coming to your first class. We start with the fundamentals and build your understanding gradually.

You'll begin by developing comfortable movement, balance, timing and an understanding of how two dancers communicate through the partnership.

There's no expectation that you should know the steps before you arrive — that's what the class is for.

Dancing Together

Leading and Following in Argentine Tango

One of the fundamental skills in Argentine Tango is learning how two people move together.

The leader communicates the direction and intention of a movement while the follower responds to that information. As both dancers develop their skills, the partnership becomes increasingly natural and connected.

Learning these skills is not simply about remembering where to put your feet. It develops awareness of your partner, the music and the space around you.

Dance to the Music

Music and Argentine Tango

Music is central to Argentine Tango. As you become more comfortable with the movements, you'll begin to explore how your dancing relates to the rhythm and character of the music.

Developing musicality allows Tango to become more than a collection of steps. The same movements can feel very different depending on the music and how the dancers choose to interpret it.

Your First Class

What Should I Wear for Argentine Tango?

You don't need specialist Tango clothing for your first class. Wear comfortable clothes that allow you to move freely.

Comfortable footwear that stays securely on your feet is a sensible starting point. As your interest in Argentine Tango develops, you can consider specialist dance shoes later.
